ATM M.S. Testimonials

I chose the School of Mines, not only because of its great location at the base of the beautiful Black Hills, but also for its small size and wide variety of class options. The small size, both in terms of the campus and student population, makes for small classes and plenty of individualized attention when needed. This has proven especially true as most of the professors in the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences maintain an open door policy, in order to be readily available to the students. Also, the Institute offers many great class options in all areas of meteorology, such as instrumentation, modeling, physics, dynamics, and chemistry. All of these options make for a very well-rounded meteorological education. Tech has further proven to be a good fit for me due to a great number of opportunities for networking and experience. The opportunity to attend and present research at conferences, an active local chapter of the American Meteorological Society, and opportunities to work at the National Weather Service make for invaluable experiences as we prepare to enter the real world.

The reason that I came to the School of Mines was for the Atmospheric Science program.  I heard it was a good program that would assist me in my future career decisions.  I also knew some people who were also attending the School of Mines.  I didn't want to go to a huge university and I enjoy the small school atmosphere.  The other deciding factor was the location and area.  I enjoy the outdoors and so I wanted to attend a school were I would have that opportunity as well.  The Black Hills definitely have a lot to offer in that respect.
Jeremy Ott, M.S. (2006-2007)

I chose the School of Mines for a few reasons.  First, the campus is small and intimate, and most of the students and faculty are friendly and helpful.  It is also less expensive compared to out-of-state universities.  Having the Black Hills a couple of miles away is nice too, and the winters are significantly warmer in Rapid City than some other areas nearby.  The IAS staff are hard workers and accomplish much under sometimes tight funding situations.  The research conducted on the premises makes a difference in the scientific community and many of the graduate students in the past have gone on to great things.
Kyle Brehe, M.S. (2005-2006)

There were a few reasons why I came here. First, I knew some other people going here. Second, I wanted to go to a school that had a reputation for technology. Third, the Black Hills is a good place for an outdoors person.
