Financial Support

Geol/GeoE Financial Support

Graduate financial support includes both teaching assistantships (GTAs) and research assistantships (GRAs).  Teaching assistants work with faculty to offer undergraduate lab courses and work about 10 hours per week, receiving a modest stipend and a 66% reduction in tuition.  The department typically awards 6-8 GTA positions each semester.  Research assistants are supported through funded research projects and typically work 20 hours per week.  Research stipends vary depending on the level of project funding, and may include support for both the academic semesters and the summer months.  GRAs may receive a tuition reduction if the research grant can pay for it.  Both GTAs and GRAs must be registered for a full graduate student load in order to be eligible for support (9 credits in the fall/spring and 6 credits during the summer).

Some research/teaching/grading positions are occasionally offered on an hourly basis.  These positions do not include a tuition reduction, and students must maintain 2 credits of registration to be eligible for these positions.

The department also awards approximately 5-10 fellowships to graduate students each year which typically range from $1000-$4000.  Fellowships are generally awarded to incoming or current students based on academic performance and departmental service.

First year students generally receive priority for GTA awards.  After that, all students are encouraged to work with faculty to develop research or fellowship funding from external sources.
