Nano Testimonials

Lori Groven, Nano Ph.D. StudentI am 1st year Ph.D. student in the Nanoscience and Nanoengineering program.  So, how did I end up here? Well, when I was 16 I read an article in Science magazine about carbon nanotubes and that is when I first became truly interested in nanoscience. However, I never thought that 11 years later I would be conducting research with nanotubes, getting a Ph.D., or have the opportunities that I have.  I got my B.S. in Chemical Engineering here at the School of Mines and then worked as a process engineer (making injection molded parts).  Well, after 2 years I woke up and realized I was missing out on the truly great parts of being interested in science. So I came back! Last year I was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship for my proposal “Combustion Synthesis of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Nanostructured Materials”.  So, this year has been great and I am getting to do my own research ideas.  I hope you’ll take the time to check out the Nanoscience and Nanoengineering program and the types of research that are being done on our campus.  There are a lot of great opportunities!  If you’d like first hand information about how classes are, what research is really like, or other questions please feel free to drop me an email at lori.groven@sdsmt.edu.
